When Life Gets In The Way

Everyone has experienced this at some point….Life getting in the way of you doing what you want to do, think you ought to do, even things you KNOW you must do!

I have a commitment to writing a reflection every Monday.  Twice this past month I have let life get in the way and not done this….Much of my energy is going to a near and dear family member, who is going through a difficult time and is benefitting from my supporting love and energy.  It’s where I am choosing to focus my attention.

However, is this a “legitimate” reason for me to skip the commitment I made to myself to write a reflection once a week?
I know what I think…What do you think?

Yes, it is legitimate if forcing yourself to stick to your commitment will make life more stressful and difficult, or if this life event simply doesn’t allow you the time to do your writing. Supporting those we love when they need us most is not something you can postpone or get to later.

When I was considering starting my business, I worried how I would handle the times when “life gets in the way”, given that I work alone. There is no one to fill in for me if I’m not around. I decided life would always come first.

I’ve already had to make this choice a few times. At first I was totally stressed, but felt relieved when I saw that the world didn’t end when the coffee shops I sell to were out of my pastries for a few days and the world didn’t end when I had to cancel an order from a caterer.

When I came back after a week of absence, I delivered at one of the coffee shops and two customers ran to me and said: “Do you make these? The week you were on vacation was the worst week of our lives!” I wasn’t really on vacation, I was tending to an urgent life matter. It was so nice to come back to a reception like this one.

I applaud you for allowing life to come first. You have so much wisdom to share and making your loved one a priority is truly priceless.
